For this assignment, we had to create an animated video of about 1 to 2 minutes for the Amsterdam Archive. We worked in pairs, so I collaborated with Phileine Terstegen. We had a lot of freedom in choosing the topic, but in the end, we decided to tell the story of tulip bulbs that people ate during the Hunger Winter. They made a kind of stamppot from them, just after the war.
Sketches and Style
We started by sketching and deciding what exactly we wanted for the animation video. Phileine created the characters, and I made the backgrounds. In the end, we chose to work with watercolor and coffee. We also decided to keep everything separate to create a 3D effect, meaning the painting was separated from the background so we could still move it. Phileine made the characters by sewing them together with needle and thread, which allowed us to move them realistically.
Sketches
Here, I started sketching the separate parts we needed. It was quite challenging to figure out exactly what we would require.
Poster
We also each had to make our own poster, and this is the one I created. I drew the background and, of course, the tulips, and painted everything with watercolor. Then I added the text in InDesign, and since it was for the Amsterdam Archive, I also included festive garlands and the Amsterdam Archive logo.
Stopmotion
We spent the whole day filming together and chose to work with stop motion. We filmed each scene separately, and afterwards, I worked on the editing. I decided to adjust the lighting slightly to give it a more vintage look. I added the text, the sound, and everything else, and then it was finished.
